LUMBERPORT -- A fatal accident happened around 1:30 p.m Sunday on Jones Run Road near Lumberport.

The Harrison County Sheriff's Department said two people were traveling in a Buick Rivera when it lost control, ran off the road and rolled over into a nearby field.

Matthew Cross, 17, was ejected, according to deputies. He landed over an embankment on Nolands Run Road.

Cross was pronounced dead on scene, police said.

He was a student at Lincoln High School, in Shinnston, officials said.

The driver, Jeffrey Workman, 22, was flown by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital, in Morgantown, deputies said. As of Monday morning, he was listed in serious condition.

Deputies said speed may have been a factor, although its still under investigation.

An accident reconstructionist has been called to help.

I'm sorry for the family...but seriously...if people would LEARN TO DRIVE, these things wouldn't happen nearly as often. There is NOWHERE that people have to be that they can't drive the speed limit to get there. If you are in that big of a hurry you should have left SOONER.

I swear people are getting their drivers licenses out of cracker jack boxes nowadays.

my prayers are with every single one of matt's family members, he really was an amazing boy...i love how me and him use to talk hours on the phone and then he'd get off because he couldn't waste his minutes, so we would just text about nothing...he is surely going to be missed, but God only takes the best, and he definately took THE best!

As a parent, I know my children are my life. My heart and prayers goes out to the family of the young man who did not make it. My prayers for a full recovery for the one who did. My children know them both and are very saddened by the loss and accident. We must keep comfort in knowing that God does everything for a reason. My prayers are with you all. God Bless.
