ELKINS -- Business is booming at Wheeler's Sports Center in Elkins, as hunters prepare for buck Season on Monday.

"I bought a box of 270 shells," said Don Mersingh, an Elkins resident.

"We stopped in here to get some ammo for my husband so he can go hunting," said Sharon Freed, from Philippi.

People are stopping in for everything from ammo to guns to blaze orange clothing, owners of Wheeler's Sports Center said.

"It's been super - we're actually having one of the best years we've ever had," said Jim Wheeler, owner of Wheeler's Sports Center.

About 280,000 hunters are expected to take to the state's woods on Monday, bringing about $233 million into the state, said the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

"Traditionally, Randolph County has been one of those counties that has a very strong hunting tradition. And it is a very rural county, so a lot of those mom and dad pop types of stores in the rural areas - this is a big week for them," said Gary Foster, game management supervisor for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Business is also picking up at local hotels, like the Super 8 in Elkins.

"It will be pretty hectic on Monday. Lot of people coming in, usually from Pennsylvania, from some places in West Virginia," said Vickie Armstrong, a desk clerk at the Super 8.

People coming in, and spending money at local businesses.

"Hunting is everything to them. They're in the woods from Monday clear through the rest of the hunting season. I hardly ever see them!" said Linda Simmons, a Parsons resident.

DNR law enforcement officers will be patrolling all of the counties starting on Monday, making sure people are following the rules and being safe.

Buck season will wrap up Dec. 5.
