HELVETIA -- Helvetia, is a small Swiss-German town in Randolph County.
Like any good Swiss-German town, it has a fabulous restaurant. It's called the Hutte, and upon entering , you feel more like you're walking into someone's home in Switzerland. A crackling wood stove heats the Hutte, and the belongings of Helvetia's first Swiss settlers decorate the rooms.
"The cupboard is from here, the table is from here, the chairs - maybe it's the spirit of the first settlers or something that you feel because it's loaded with them," said Eleanor Mailloux, the Hutte's owner.
Diners say they can't get enough of the Hutte's homey, warm atmosphere.
"Yeah, it's definitely more like eating in someone's house than at a restaurant. Each table is different, the rooms are all different -- it's like an old Inn or tavern," said Willie Lehmann, a customer.
People come from all over to experience her restaurant's authentic Swiss-German dishes like sauerbraten, bratwurst and more, Mailloux said.
"We have people that say we've traveled all over the state and this is the best food we've had. And I'm not kidding you, we hear this frequently," said Mailloux.
Back in the kitchen, cooks are making one of the restaurant's signature dishes: a sausage sandwich with sweet kraut and apple sauce, and cheese soup, made from Helvetia cheese.
"If you like cheese, you're bound to like this, it's a very thick soup! Very hardy for that matter. I can't a whole lot of it because it's very fulfilling," said Lori Smith, one of the restaurant's cooks.
Diners describe their favorite dishes:
"Probably the chicken hennelly, which is quite good. Morgan hennelly it is on the menu," said Judith Gray, a regular customer.
"I ordered the split pea soup and the homemade sausage sandwich," said Jeff Phillips, a Ripley resident.
"We had a buffet that day -- roast beef and potatoes and some really good corn," said Adam Barr, also from Ripley.
No matter what they order, diners agree that the Hutte's unique mix of history, coziness and delicious food brings them back time and time again.
"These are the types of places when my wife and I travel around WV this would be someplace she would definitely like to see," said Phillips.
"I mean, from the very core, it's family. And then there's a whole sense that this community is making people feel very much at home and like family," said Gray.
The Hutte restaurant is open every day of the week. Sundays are a special treat with an all day buffet, featuring samplings from the entire menu.
