FAIRMONT -- The Mylan Puskar Health Right Marion County Outreach held a ribbon cutting Tuesday, and city, county and state officials gathered at the Soup Opera on Quincy Street in the afternoon to celebrate its preparedness to serve the uninsured.

"We've seen 50 individual patients and we've had 118 visits," said Laura Jones, Executive Director and that's just being open one day a week.

The free clinic has been open since February 5th, but with the donation of free blood work and X-rays by Fairmont General Hospital, it's now ready to provide a full range of services, including blood pressure checks, cholesterol checks, and exams - all done by volunteering nurses and doctors.

Roman Prezioso is the Chairman of the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee, and says free clinics like this offer regular checkups that can catch big health problems.

"Eighty percent of the health care money is spent on acute illnesses," reported Prezioso Tuesday, "And those, a lot of times, can be prevented. So with the help of these free clinics and all the free time that's being donated by doctors and nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and all the people in the medical field, we provide a termendous service for the less fortunate."

It's no secret that there is vibrant debate in Washington concerning health care reform, and Prezioso says his staff is working hard to determine what works best for West Virginians.

"We have to be very careful to craft legislation that we can look at the entire eyetem that everyone has good health care," said Prezioso.

Prezioso says there are still a lot of questions to be answered regarding health care reform in West Virginia. But in the meantime, officials here at the free clinic say they'll be open to help anyone who doesn't have insurance.

"We don't know what's going to happen in Washington at this point," said Jones, "But what we do know is that Health Right will be here as long as necessary to make sure that the low income, uninsured folks in Marion County, Mon County, Preston, Taylor, that they have health care."

The free clinic is open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
