CLARKSBURG -- The Clarksburg City Council has approved spending more than $610,000 in stimulus money to improve the city's sidewalks and energy efficiency.

It will use a $530,000 grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to improve the historic downtown's sidewalks.

The public will notice the biggest changes down Trader's Alley, which runs parallel to Main and Pike Streets, according to City Manager Martin Howe.

It will spend an additional $80,000 in stimulus money on a guaranteed energy savings contract. The Constellation Energy/CLT Efficient Technologies group performed an energy audit for the city and suggested changes that will save it money in the long run.

"It's 100 percent guaranteed energy savings," explained Howe. "If you do not receive the energy savings to pay back a debt, this company has to make up that difference."

Howe said the city plans to replace street lights, traffic lights, and interior lights throughout the city.

Pretty bad that they can blow money on sidewalks but nothing to improve community relations with it's teen population!

The Titanic is sinking! Quick lets throw money in the boiler to keep her afloat.

Who cares about Trader's Alley. The only people benefiting are the private property owner's on the alley. And downtown does not need updated sidewalks.

How about creating housing for the homeless in Glen Elk living in tents? Maybe the mayor can take them muffins! Or is this a case of shutting the door to ignore the problem.

Clarksburg needs managers with enough intestinal fortitude to make decisions (and follow through) that the local Illuminati won't agree with

WHY SHOULD WE BE SURPRISED. THE CITY OF CLARKSBURG HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR WASTING MONEY. SURELY THE CITY COULD FIND BETTER WAYS TO SPEND THE MONEY THAN WASTING IT ON BEAUTIFYING THE SIDWALKS. WHAT ABOUT FEEDING THE HUNGRY. WORKING ON HOUSING FOR THE POOR. WHAT GOOD ARE SIDWALKS IF YOU HAVE NO ONE TO WALK ON THEM. CLARKSBURG IS FAST BECOMING A GHOST TOWN. VERY FEW BUSINESSES ARE LEFT. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN THE DOWNTOWN OF THE CITY WAS FULL OF BUSINESSES AND PEOPLE. SATURDAY YOU COULD HARDLY GET THROUGH THE STREETS.

There is little left in the downtown area to bother with. What is the point of pretty sidewalks, if there are no businesses to go to.

What a shining example of inefficiency and waste at their very finest! Why not use the money to repair dangerous roads, such as the crumbling street that leads to the Lowndes Hill YMCA? This is an unbelievable disregard for the wellbeing of citizens of the area. Bravo!
