FAIRMONT -- The Marion County Sheriff's Department has charged the former director of the Fairmont Marion County Food Pantry with embezzlement.

Mitchell Weaver, 51, of Fairmont, worked as the food pantry from May 1, 2005, to March 30, 2009, according to the criminal complaint.

During that time, Weaver wrote $71,992 in checks from the pantry's bank account to himself, detectives alleged.

Of that amount, less than $18,000 was his salary, meaning he embezzled $53,792, investigators said.

Weaver was charged with one felony count of embezzlement and taken to the North Central Regional Jail, but has since been released on $20,000 cash or surety bond.

This is such a shame....and a misconception

I can not speak for this nonprofit as I have never been involved in it, but let me explain the makings of most nonprofits.

Most charities consist of a Board of Directors who oversee all functions of a nonprofit, from staffing and payroll to fundraisers and human resource issues. This board then hires an executive director who is entrusted with oversight of the day to day operations of the agency.

I do not know how the abuse of funds was not detected in this case, but I can assure you all that in most cases, this would not be able to happen. Please do not let stories like these keep you from donating back into your community. If you are suspicious or unsure, call and talk to, or come and visit, the agency you are thinking about donating to. Most of them will be happy to take time out of their busy day to meet with you, show you exactly how funds are handled, and where your donation will go.

I don't condone embezzlement, or stealing --however, with an income of approximately $4, 500 per year (minus taxes if he even had to pay any for that low amount) I can see how a person might be tempted to steal while handling that amount of cash--BUT he was in charge of helping those in similar or WORSE situations to his own, and therefore ought to have had empathy for them, and NOW because of this, people like Tommy (below) will continue to use this example as an excuse to be selfish and not give to charity--which is VERY UNFORTUNATE especially given these rough economic times and the rise in unemployment and homelessness!

~but by the Grace of God go I...any one of us may find ourselves in dire straights one day, and things like this hurt all of us.

Less than 18K was his salary? My God. I don't condone embezzlement, but I can see why someone might be tempted, with a pathetic salary like that.

This is the exact reason I and many others do not donate to charity. The funds is mostly mishandled, not only by this group, but in my opinion many others. Where is the oversite committee for this organization, that it took several years to catch up with the missing money?
