MORGANTOWN -- Andrea Soccorsi is the fourth generation of her family to live in Jerome Park near Sabraton. She and more than 35 of her neighbors are coming to grips with what Morgantown's growth means to their area.

"A lot of the focus in the neighborhood has been on similar issues that concern other neighborhoods as well: increased traffic problems, cut-throughs in the neighborhood, and ways we can alleviate some of those problems," said Soccorsi at the November meeting, held in the Sabra United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Ridgewood Avenue is a popular route for drivers who want to get from downtown Morgantown to Sabraton quickly. The traffic commission has approved the group's ideas; all that remains is approval from city council.

"We have a lot of speeding in this area," noted Soccorsi, "So we're looking at some specific roadways that we might want to attend do, speed humps and raised crosswalks, increased signage throughout the neighborhood."

Specifically, it would like to see speed humps placed in three major traffic areas: the 1200 block of Carlisle Avenue, in the alley between Richwood Avenue and Carlisle Avenue, and Darst Street.

The Jerome Park Neighborhood Association is also making plans to improve its green space - Mayfield Park.

"Right now it's really a lovely green space, but there's really nothing there," remarked Soccorsi. "We'd really like to attend to the future of that park, in relation to its usage and what we envision for that park in terms of neighborhood green space."

The group is still collecting ideas from neighbors, and says it is always looking for volunteers to help organize the neighborhood.

Its next gathering is a Holiday Party on Dec. 12, then the next regular meeting in February.
