MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia University Students were hard at work Saturday in Monongalia and Preston Counties where they helped out local agencies.

This year more than 300 students volunteered their Saturday as part of the United Ways Make a Difference Day.

"Make a Difference Day is a national day of service," said Brett White, Center for Civic Engagement. "It's the largest encompassed day of service in the country."

West Virginia University student Laura Pugh helped hang and sort clothes at Christian Help in downtown Morgantown.

"To me it means helping people out that can't help themselves like people who aren't as privileged as us. If we do something to help them then in the long run they'll be helped out," said Laura Pugh, Black Student Union.

While volunteers feel good about helping, the agencies are thankful for the extra hands.

"We greatly appreciate all the help here at Rock Forge Neighborhood House we have a lot of events, today especially, we wouldn't have been able to do the things we do without the help pf the WVU students," said Chris Williams, Rock Forge Neighborhood House.

Right before the holidays it's a busy time of the year for all agencies.

Students did cleaning inside and yard work outside at the Neighborhood house.

They sorted and cleaned items at Animal Friends' Lucky's Attic.

And helped organize clothes, clean, and vacuum at Christian Help.

Those were just three of the fifteen agencies where students helped with projects.

Giving students a day to make a difference, that may lead to even longer.

"I think I might come help here and help more," said Pugh. "I have plenty of clothes I can bring here."

The WVU Center for Civic Engagement says this is the most participation its had in all seven years and it hopes it continues to grow.

Each student volunteer received lunch donated by the Boston Beanery.
