ELKINS -- Elkins cross-country runner Letitia Propst is the two-time defending AAA State Champion, and she is only a junior. She's looking to make it number three, but she's encountered a rough road this year.

"Well Letitia had an IT band strain and it was one of those things where we weren't sure how long she'd be out. We just had to wait and see what the prognosis was going to be," Elkins Head Cross-Country Coach Shellie Burda said.

Propst sat out for more than a month this season but has won every race since her return. However, she said nothing would be worth it without her team.

"They're so important. They really do help me out a lot. They just make it fun to come out here and work hard. It wouldn't be fun at all if I had to do it by myself," junior runner Letitia Propst said.

Propst isn't just a state champion. she is the three-time Region II Champion, two-time NCAC Runner of the Year and has twice been named the state Cross-Country Gatorade Athlete of the Year. Propst is accomplished but also a great athlete in other ways.

"Letitia is a hard worker, she believes in what she's doing and she brings an energy to the team that when she's not here you can tell that it's missing, and when she's here the intensity at our practices just rises because she brings that to it," Burda said.

Propst said winning the state championship has been the highlight of her career and though she feels pressure every day, she's ready to do it again.

"I think I'm most excited to see how much better I've gotten and progressed and see how I've overcome it; overcome the injury," said Propst.

Propst said she loves to compete. Her favorite part about running is the feeling of winning.

Now that was an athlete of the week, maybe of the year. Excellent report. Was all about the athlete and not about the reporter. Like to see this reporter do more of those.
