MORGANTOWN -- Cheat Lake Middle School will get a new name when its students move into the old University High School.

The students voted to call it Mountaineer Middle School.

Some parents raised concerns about the new name at Tuesday night's Monongalia County Board of Education meeting but the board decided to accept the students vote.

The school is undergoing renovations and could open next spring.

I am a Cheat Lake Middle parent who tried to table the issue at the School Board meeting. I was not against the kids voting at all. What I am fighting for is the kids had 3-5 minutes to vote. They were not given previous knowledge of the four names on the ballot. The adults dropped the ball. They had to choose from Cheat Lake, Mountaineer, Eyas and Zach Morgan. 10-12 year olds were told they were voting for a NEW name for a NEW school, so most of the students knocked CL off the list right away. The other two were kind of odd If,which they didn't, get any more information except what or who they were. No time to discuss, research, just chat about the options. This could have been such a learning experience. Oh and NO most did not know there was a school in Clarksburg. MANY would like a revote which was proven by a petition by students (178) and a survey by parents (87%). The Board didn't care. They had made their decision before we got there. They brought up the Randolph Co. problems years ago. They were scared. I just wish the adults would pony up and admit they disserviced the process and should allow the kids a revote.

Why does it matter if there are two mountaineer middle schools. They are in different counties. And I'm pretty sure Clarksburg's Mountaineer Middle stemmed from the high school being Liberty Mountaineers. Also, I heard on WVAQ this morning that they didn't keep it Cheat Lake Middle because it will no longer be near Cheat Lake, well what about Cheat Lake Physicians, it is not near Cheat Lake. As long as the students are happy. That's what matters.

Mountaineer Middle makes a lot more sense for a school in Morgantown than it does for a school in Clarksburg, and I'm from Clarksburg. I am just happy that they let the kids have a vote and then they stuck with what the kids wanted. I know that the Mountaineer Middle in Clarksburg has had some pretty good sports teams so far, but I'm sure that the Mountaineer Middle in Morgantown will have no problem defining their own legacy and doing great things for their school. Good Luck!

"shut clarksburg out" Are you serious? Are you sure that you are not the one in middle school? Going with "common sense" when stated "Put your defensiveness away, and hope all of our WV schools are great!" Very true! Maybe if we didn't have parents like yourself we would not have as many issues in the school systems with students. Think before you speak, the kids are listening!

I am so glad they let the student body vote on the name for the new school and then stuck with it. It does make sense, the school is located in Morgantown home of the Mountaineers. Quit whining.

I doubt those middle school students knew there was a school by that name in Clarksburg. Even if they did, these are kids, they were allowed to vote, they live in or near Morgantown where the Mountaineers play so it isn't a big jump to see why they chose the name. Put your defensiveness away, and hope all of our WV schools are great!

There is already a Mountaineer Middle School, located in Clarksburg. Be original and get your own name. I guess this is just more step in trying to shut Clarksburg out. You'll have a tough name to live up to trying to be as great as OUR MOUNTAINEER MIDDLE SCHOOL!
