CLARKSBURG -- Some business owners in Glen Elk have raised concerns about the crowds on the streets around the Clarksburg Mission. Now the Mission has come up with a possible solution to the problem.

Businesses in Glen Elk are concerned the patrons from the Mission are hindering their business.

The Mission has teamed up with a group of students from Fairmont State University to build a new Open Door Day Shelter that will help solve many different problems.

"We're building a new site for the Open Door," Director of Ministry Lou Ortenzio said. "A site that's more adaptable to them."

The Open Door Day Shelter opened its doors almost 10 years ago. The shelter gives people a place to come for a free breakfast, a cup of coffee, and friendly faces.

The new Open Door Day Shelter will be located where the Mission's community garden is now. The plan is to make the new shelter at least twice as big as it is now, and the extra space is something that Open Door Director Helen Jones said they could use.

"Right now we still have 75 to 80 a day. Not only do we need more space just for them to sit, because we feed them breakfast. We need more storage space," she said. "All we have is a small room. We also need another bathroom facility."

The Mission teamed up with seven Fairmont State University students to come up with a design. The students each turned in their own blueprint and the final design will be the students' senior class project.

Ortenzio says the new site should solve several problems in the community.

"We want to be responsible neighbors. We want to contribute to business development over here. We don't want to impede on that and anything we can do to promote that, we want to do."

Ortenzio says they could start construction on the building as early as this winter.

There is no word yet on how much the total project will cost. The Mission is now waiting on finalizing an exact plan for the new building.
