FLEMINGTON -- The Taylor County Sheriff's department is investigating the vandalism of a local cemetery. Today families visited their loved ones' graves to survey the damage.
The Sheriff's Department says one or more vandals tore through the Flemington Cemetery Tuesday night, smashing vases and graves. And the families with loved ones there are looking for answers.
Sheila Law's sister passed away last October.
"I just recently lost her to arthritis," Law shared. "She was my best friend, and she was just someone who was so special."
Then, in February, Law lost her mother.
"We tried to preserve her memory with the headstone and with the vases we placed," she said, "And for someone to come out and just have no regard or respect for our loved ones who have passed away...I don't understand."
Both were laid to rest at Flemington Cemetery, and both headstones fell victim to Tuesday's vandalism. Families from all over Harrison County came to drive through the cemeteries, hoping their family's markers weren't hit.
Violet McKinney's whole family is buried there. She says this is the second time vandals have struck her grandparents headstone.
"They didn't mean much to them, but they meant a lot to me," she assured. "This is ridiculous. I hope whoever did it gets what they deserve."
Many say if those responsible would have known who these people were, they might have thought twice.
"The families, I'm sure, after laying their loved ones to rest, have the comfort of knowing that what they've put here in remembrance of them is going to stay," said Law, "And now that is just...gone."
The sheriff's department says the vandal could face destruction of property and desecration of a grave charges. If you have any information leading to the capture of these vandals, call (304) 265-3428.
