Mannington, W.Va. -- "Three ...two ...one ...LEGO!"
The Mannington 4-H Club Robotics Teams previewed their presentations tonight. Before competing in the 2008 West Virginia FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament. FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology."
They'll go up against 22 other teams in Wheeling on December 13th.
"The whole thing is made from LEGOS, so that makes it a lot more fun," said Hannah Hayes from the Techno Peeps team.
The two groups, aged 9 to 15, have had 10 weeks to use their head, heart, health, and hands to create a robot to navigate the obstacle course.
This year's course theme is "Climate Connections." The course includes relocating "carbon monoxide," "biking," and "installing a levee."
These 4-Hers in Mannington aren't just playing with LEGOs and robots. Learning about climate change and how it affects this town is just one of the ways they're making the best better.
"It's really rewarding for them to see how the time and effort they've put into the robot and the programming go full circle here at the competition," said Amber Morris, a 4-H volunteer.
For the kids ...it's just an exciting new twist on a classic toy.
"It's a really neat thing to do," said Hannah. "Everyone should try it sometime!"
