ELKINS -- Alice Sabatino is an AmeriCorps Vista who works with youth in Randolph County. She says there's not a lot of things for young people to do in the area.
"We did a couple of surveys at the high school and they stated that there's nothing for the kids to do, so they end up getting in trouble because they have no place to go. And they said if they had a place to go, then it would give the kids something to do," says Sabatino.
Which is why parent TR Eidell plans to turn an old warehouse into a youth center.
"I think it's the greatest thing in the world because now they can come somewhere. Instead of Friday and Saturday night sitting on the corner running around with nothing to do at 11 or 12 o'clock at night, they can come to the youth center and enjoy themselves and not be at home going 'oh, I didn't do anything tonight,'" says Eidell.
Elkins teens say they're excited for the youth center, which will offer them a place to hang out and learn new things.
"A place to play video games, hang out with your friends - stuff like that. And then also, you know, if they need help with school, maybe get some tutors in there," says Dustin Standridge, president of Youth Empowered Solutions, a Randolph County youth group.
Elkins is also getting skatepark. The City of Elkins recently donated 15 thousand dollars and land at Glendale Park. The money will be used to pour the park's concrete pad. Snowshoe Ski Resort has donated over 15 thousand dollars of equipment, like rails and ramps, to the future skatepark.
"They should be pretty excited - I know I am. Because now we don't have to drive to Buckhannon or Snowshoe. Now we can just go right down the street," says Standridge.
Eidell says there's still a lot of work to be done to the future youth center, like fixing the roof and flooring, and upgrading the electrical system. He says he hopes to have the center open by December.
Mayor Judy Guye says she hopes the skatepark will be open by the summer.
