FAIRMONT -- The Brassier Bazaar is sponsored by Kaleidescope, a non-profit organization benefiting victims of breast cancer. The third annual Bazaar will held October 14.
The specially-made bras will be modeled at the Bazaar in October and then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The idea started at Vittoria and Banks Art For Your Soul Gallery in Fairmont more than three years ago. Rhonda Sanford, a board member for Kaleidoscope, said since that time, the event has taken off.
"I think when this was started, no one could imagine people would have come up with such elaborate and fun and funky bras," she said.
The bras are made by people in the community. The money raised from the event goes to brightening the day of breast cancer victims. Vicki Angotti, the owner of Vittoria and Banks Art says there are many of organizations that help with medical expenses; but not Kaleidoscope.
"We give them gift certificates for a manicure, pedicure, a massage, dinner out, movie tickets; anything to uplift their spirits and pamper them," she said.
For the first time this year, there is a pre-show gallery at Fairmont State University. Bras from last year are being displayed in Wallman Hall. Event planners say it gives artists one more day to show off their creations and hopes it will inspire others to participate.
Anyone can participate and make a bra for breast cancer. People of all ages and genders are getting involved. Angotti said you don't have to spend a lot of money, just a little creativity.
"It can be as easy as you want it to be, or as elaborate as you want it to be," she said.
Bras made for the bazaar can be brought to Victoria and Banks Gallery where they will be displayed before the big show in October.
