WESTON -- Authorities in Lewis County are investigating an apparent assault that has left a man in critical condition.
Investigators with the Lewis County Sheriff's Department said the victim was found just before 9pm Thursday night naked, bound and gagged and stabbed in the neck.
Officials said the crime occurred on Mud Lick Road in Lewis County.
The victim, a 30 year old Morgantown resident, was bound by duct tape and rope on his arms, leg and face. Sheriff's deputies also said the man was beaten and had a stab wound to the neck.
Evidence and statements suggest he was threatened with a pistol and shot at.
Deputies have arrested a suspect in the case, Stanley Toland III. Toland is charged with malicious wounding and is being held in the Central Regional Jail.
Prior to his arrest, Toland apparently attempted suicide by cutting his wrist with a knife. Investigators have not yet released a motive in the assault.
Chief Deputy David Coffman of the Lewis County Sheriff's Department said the victim was able to free his feet and hobble some distance to a Division of Highways building, where someone was able to call for help.
The man was taken first to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, before being taking to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Deputies say a last check, the victim remained in critical condition.
